You Don’t Need a Fancy Algorithm to Build Wealth—Here’s Why

The other day, I was working at a Barnes & Noble while my daughter was at her gymnastics camp. Between sips of coffee and scrolling through emails, I heard something that immediately caught my attention—two women talking about money.

Not gossip, not shopping—investing.

One woman sat tall, speaking with confidence:
"I’m smart enough to hire a financial advisor. He has an algorithm that runs 25 scenarios to see if I’ll have enough for retirement. I invest through Charles Schwab. I have an IRA."

Her friend, on the other hand, sat a little smaller, shoulders rounded, nodding along but not saying much. Her body language told me everything—she didn’t feel as confident about this conversation.

And I wanted to jump in so badly and say, “Go grab my investing guide!” Maybe I should have.

Talking About Money Shouldn’t Be Taboo

Here’s the thing—I LOVE hearing women talk about money. It shouldn’t be whispered or feel uncomfortable. We should be having these conversations with confidence, like we talk about our careers, relationships, or the next trip we’re planning.

Good for this woman for investing. Good for her for recognizing she needs help. But at the same time, I couldn’t help but think—does she know she’s giving away a huge chunk of her future wealth in fees?

The Hidden Cost of Financial Advisors

Many advisors charge 1% (or more) of your portfolio every year. That might not sound like much, but over time, that fee compounds just like your investments do—except it’s working against you.

📌 Let’s say you have $500,000 invested.

  • If your advisor charges 1%, that’s $5,000 a year in fees.
  • Over 30 years? That could add up to hundreds of thousands of dollars in lost wealth.

And here’s the real kicker—you don’t need an algorithm running 25 retirement scenarios to know if you’re on track.

A Simpler, Smarter Approach to Investing

You can build wealth without paying excessive fees or using complex strategies. Here’s what actually matters:

Know your financial goals – What are you investing for? Retirement? A home? Financial freedom?
Be consistent with your contributions – Investing isn’t about timing the market. It’s about time in the market.
Use simple, effective investment products – ETFs and index funds (a.k.a. the low-cost, high-growth secret of wealthy investors).
